My roommate does validation work for AMD. I could see if he could point me in the right direction of finding the right people to speak to about this.

Another possibility.

http//www.angstrom.com/products/titan64_beta.htm

They have a beta program on their dual-Opteron (NewIsys-derived) server.

Can't hurt to look into it.

Default Alpha

I'm fairly new to all this, so if Alpha CPU's have been brought up before . . ., but I haven't seen a version for Alpha. I run VMS and have access to a large machine (6 processors, 1GB memory) with idle (standby) time. Any thoughts?

There is no Prime95 version because I believe George wrote Prime95 in assembly language for i386 processors.

There is Glucas that you could use and then use the manual test page websites for check out and check ins of numbers. There may already be precompiled binaries of Glucas for VMS and Alpha.

Makes sense. All I've read from the release notes are for i386 forward. Very impressive.

I did some searching for Glucas and it turns out that Glucas is for the Tru64 OS on Alpha. I'll see if porting to the VMS OS is doable for me (given what the website indicates).
Thanks for the info!

I have used the VMS binaries on Ernst Mayer's page and just for fun (seld inflicted pain) I compiled the newer code. I honestly can't remember the timings (I have them at the office) but I thought they OK for a 1GHz Alpha. I'm not the Alpha admin so all I could do was 'test' the system for a short while.

Thanks xyzzy, that did the trick.

I can do LL, but I'll have to double check the .c and .m64 code for factoring.

Initial impression is that my 525MHz Alpha is slow relative to the prime95 running on my Athlon XP 1.467GHz. With 6 CPUs on the Alpha it'll be interesting to see what happens . . .

Default Factoring and p, qmin, and qmax

After fixing a couple of typos, mfactor is compiling and linking on VMS V7.3 and C V6.5. If anyone wants the changes related to this combination, let me know.

The mfactor program is looking for p, qmin, and qmax.

I know to go to primenet and get a number, p, for factoring, but before I do that, I have a couple of questions. Hopefully they've not already been asked, just point me in the right direction if they have.

1) To get my factoring feet wet, can someone suggest a few numbers p to get started?

2) How do I determine qmin and qmax for each p?

thx!

Sometimes it is just a matter of rtfm or in this case rtfw(ebpage). qmin, qmax, et. al. are explained. The selftests have passed on VMS so I'm all set.
