I'm not too familiar with flatland, but I think it lacks the "up" coordinate. This looked like the Mario side scrolling world which had the z and y coordinates and lacks the "outward" one.

Mario's world isn't truly 2-dimensional, since some pixels in his body can cross each other when he changes direction. In a true 2-d world, a 180 wouldn't necessarily mean the pixels changing position, and if they did move, they'd have to move around each other rather than over or through.

As a resident, I can say that, yes, there is no up and down here.

Not really.

Various flatland circuitry designs are (or were) standard interview questions for techies at MSR Cambridge. Depending on background of candidate and how nasty we felt at the time, we asked for anything from crossing wires to transistor design.
