Yes, it is likely that it is one of these, of course the writing is extremely stylised if that were true.

If you look on it's side, you can see this radical on the second character: 立

So this character could possibly be: 彦 産

The first character is more tricky because the stylisation is heavy. I suspect that the left could be composed of this radical: 氵

There are many many characters containing the radical 氵, however, so finding the correct one could be difficult. I'll have another look into it soon, but for now I have somewhere that I have to go.

edit: this is in reference to the Top picture.

edit2: this is based on what I know of Japanese, some of the Chinese-origin characters can vary between Japanese and Chinese.

Here are some old Chinese coins. Old Korean coins look very similar (Modern ones have Hangul of course). This was interesting to look at; I was not aware of the knife and shovel money.

None of this resembles your ring at least to my eye.

p.s. I thought that the tall character inside the ring might be 美 (měi) possibly "beauty" with the bottom of it opened up near the furigana/ruby characters

It's a fun game, and I'm looking forward to the solution to the puzzle...But ultimately, it's probably just one partner telling the other how awesome they are, or maybe it's connected to a memory they have of each other. All the possibilities I can think of are all connected to cementing relationships, which is one of the reasons jewelry exists in the first place. Unless of course, the owner was very vain.

Then again, it could be a treasure map that could make you extremely wealthy overnight. I suggest you rent a copy of Goonies to prepare. ;)

Edit:Indiana Jones movies could be helpful as well, though Goonies has more entertainment value, in my opinion.

...or had the job of imprinting the wax seal of many pieces of mail, or stamping (signing or authenticating) the contents. While the personally decorative role of rings probably goes back to their origins, they also led more functional existences.

The signs represent an archaic (Old) chinese which is often used on prestige objects. The ring as such could be from Japan, Korea as well as from China since this archaic chinese is used also there for its decorative (and mysterious) purpose.
