Default The Archive...

I had to kill the archive... It doubled the size of our database and slowed everything down too much... We only had 75 out of 375 digests posted which means the database would have gotten huge...

It looks like when we get to 10,000 messages we'll either have to start pruning old messages or maybe find a faster database server...

I think what I will do is mirror the uncompressed digests on the mersenneforum.org web server and let Google index them... It will take a few months, but it will eventually work...

Now I have to find pakaran another job... :)

I'll be on AIM this evening, or reply here.

I was wondering why the forum was so slow this morning!

This worries me. Isn't the forum MySQL based?

If we consider using MySQL for an open-source reimplementation of the PrimeNet server it will have large databases. Properly indexed, the database size should have virtually no effect on timings to access records. Is MySQL a toy database or is ready for a real job like the Primenet server.

It is possible the the bulletin board software uses MySQL non-optimally. Let's hope so.

This is totally a shot in the dark, and probably irrelevant, but does the message at the bottom of the pages saying it is in "Debug Mode" have anything to do with it? I ask because usually when you compile an executable in debug mode, it runs slower.

The problem is, I think, the fact we are not on dedicated hardware... To make the jump up to dedicated hardware is a significant jump in cost... I'm starting now to look for a better host to hold our database... I figure at our current rate we have 6 months to a year before we outgrow this one...

There are phpBB forums out there that have hundreds of thousands of messages and they are just as fast as we are... I assume they have a heavy-duty server hosting the database...

The debug mode just reports the number of database queries and the time taken... It has no effect on speed...

Pity - I was hoping it would finally extend forward in time to the point where I joined the project, Primenet was running properly, etc. etc.

I was quoted this yesterday...

Quote:
Our QS-0 packages have the same details as our QS-1 server packages, with the exception of the processor speed. So, the following still holds for all QS-0 packages:

- 256MB RAM
- 30GB Hard Drive
- 60GB/Mon Traffic
- 250 Mailboxes
- Includes Virtual Domain

We have a number of QS-0 processor speeds, the lower the processor, the lower the monthly fee. The two lowest end packages we currently have are as follows:

1) Pentium 667 for $149/month.
2) Celeron 900 for $199/month.

We also have packages (as available) for $249/month and $299/month. You may inquire about these if you would like a higher processor speed.

------------------------------------------------------

The MySQL database packages have 0 bandwidth allowances (all of the bandwidth used is internal for the queries), so they are $50 less than the full servers.

Thus, and this is the simple bottom line you wanted all along I'm sure, you could get a dedicated MySQL database server for $99/month. If that or any of the other packages interest you, let me know.

Gwendolyn R. Schmidt, Systems Administrator, pair Networks, Inc.
I think it would be hard to justify that kind of expense...

Xyzzy, I have a web server that could host the site. It runs Ensim, which means it is a Redhat machine. There is presently very little running out of it (except Prime95 ops: ), and while I intend to run it as a business at some point, I have no pricing for service right now (it would be considerably cheaper than pair, though).

I appreciate the offer, but for now what we have is adequate... I figure the slow pages happen only a few times a day... At least that is what I see and I'm here all day off and on... The only advantage to having a dedicated server is we wouldn't have to wait in line for our queries...

I figure I have a year before we are in trouble so that gives me plenty of time to learn how to tweak everything... It might even be possible to set everything up to use two different database servers, like maybe a load balanced deal... I have plenty of databases left that I could use, and it is easy to make sure they are on different physical machines...

Um, so Xyzzy, if you get everything tweaked and working well, will you bring back the archive? I agree with quikdave that it would be nice to see what went on before more recent members like us joined.
