Default Thanksgiving

Today is when we give thanks for having successfully exported a bunch of religious fundamentalists in 1620, after which they went on to create a Christian State and to massacre everyone who stood in their way.

Thank you Paul for that British view of the day. Here are a few more.

And here is a little primer for those whose ancestors were too timid to explore and decided to cower in subjugation to the crown:

So I've always been curious how European retailers get on without a "Black Friday". How does everyone know when to start Christmas shopping?

A fine example of how the retailers have successfully brainwashed everyone into spending their money on things they don't need at certain times of the year.

Different European cultures have their own solutions to that one.
For people in the United Kingdom (over a certain age), see:

For people in the Kingdom of the Netherlands (including the Caribbean part), Belgium, Luxembourg and parts of northern France, see:

Learning about Black Friday from Google Trends

Besides the data analysis based on US-based searches, also mentions several other countries where retailers have established similar "consumer holidays".
