 2004-05-11, 23:54 #1 dans     Oct 2002 3×7 Posts Power consumption The local "OfficeMegaMartSuperStore" has a sale running on APC UPSs so I nabbed one for about half price. One of the features is a software package that shows the real time power usage of your machine. Running on my Athlon 64 3200 my system uses 204W while idling, and 240W while crunching M22595429 36W just to run a processor, oh my I'll have to test out some of my P4 systems when I have the time. Lets seem, my current electrical rate is $.062853 per kWh... that adds up over the course of a year! can you give alittle more info about the equiptment. the way it sounds i would like to own one like where you got it and price if you don't mind

 2004-05-12, 04:03 #3 dans     Oct 2002 3·7 Posts Nothing fancy It was just the local OfficeMax, I think they are national. They have the APC 1000VA Back-UPS XS on sale for $99.99, they run about$130-180 elsewhere. (Here is the local flyer - they may honor it elsewhere.

I tested a brand new cluster of 43 dual Xeons a couple of weeks ago by running two "mprime -t" on each. The UPS got overloaded and broke down in a cascade which took eight heavy circuit breakers! After fixing that, I ran the test again, and mprime reported no errors.

Good thing I found this problem before the machines went into production. The machines are used for gene sarching in large genome databases, and are will often be heavily loaded.

Notice how fast the CPU temperature increases after you start mprime, and compare factoring to LL testing. You could do LL testing for heating in the winter, and switch to factoring only in the summer. Who says searching for big primes isn't useful!? I hope the next version of mprime can take input from a temperature sensor and automatically adjust the room temperature by choosing a suitable work type.

In Windows, you could poll the temperature sensor, stop the Prime95 service, edit the value of Throttle in prime.ini, and restart the service. Or the equivalent in mprime of this Prime95 feature. :-)
