Iceland Under Threat of Volcanic Eruption After Being Jolted by Thousands of Quakes | Sputnik News
Quote:
The series of earthquakes came amid warnings of a possible eruption from Grimsvotn, the country's most active volcano, as scientists recorded high levels of sulfur dioxide, indicating the presence of so-called shallow magma.

Located on the northwestern side of the Vatnajökull ice cap, Grimsvotn last erupted in 2011. Back then, it led to a temporary closure of Reykjavik's Keflavik Airport and caused the cancellation of some 900 flights to Europe.

The IMO stressed that the risk during an eruption is related to flooding caused by melting ice. “The possibility of an eruption triggered by a glacial flood, which could occur in the coming weeks or months, has to be considered”, the institute said.

Grimsvotn's last eruption was preceded by the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, which caused huge billows of smoke and ash that left more than 100,000 flights cancelled and 8 million passengers stranded.
Icelandic mega-eruptions have been implicated in multiple "nuclear winter" climate-cooling episodes in history. Thus, tangentially, another such episode of - to coin a term - historivolcanological interest, this one due to an Alaskan volcano:

There have now been (at least) six tremors in the series, including a 2.1 directly underneath me in El Paso. I didn't feel that one either.

La Palma still has volcanic activity. The last major eruption was less than 50 years ago. The present tremors might be small but a few people are wondering whether they are a harbinger of events to come. Not too far from here an underwater eruption near the island of El Hierro began a couple of years ago. Big enough to make international news; not big enough to cause damage.

2.1 is generally not felt.
It is common for a 3 not to be felt.
Most within 15km will feel a 4
A 5 is universally felt in the area (except for some in cars or other shaky or shake resistant locations.)

On July 7, 1980 I was in Champaign, IL and felt the 5.2 that hit Sharpsburg, KY. I was in a third-story office. At first I thought a truck was going by, or standing in the street below, and looked. No truck. Then things started shaking a bit, and I knew it had to be an earthquake. A bookcase full of books started rocking back and forth. I guessed (correctly) that I would have enough time to go over and steady it before it crashed forward. After an eternity, the rocking stopped.

Some years later, a bit NW of Chicago, I "felt" a nearby low-magnitude quake (a 3.4 according to local news reports IIRC). Rather than any sense of shaking, it was a vague sensation of something like a passing truck (though there was no truck), followed by a sense of absolute panic. It was a thoroughly unpleasant sensation of sheer, mindless terror, like everything was starting to fly off into space. And then it stopped.

I was about 30 km from a 4.2 earlier today. Was standing on a concrete slab and noticed it quite well.
And in the last 10 minutes I was 4 km from a 3.8 in a structure that shakes nicely. Fun!

Felt/heard a 2.3 aftershock about 10 minutes ago that was ~4 km away.
