Allow me to ask:

Since when is mathematics done by "opinion"?

In the formal and theorem-proving sense, not for a rather long time.

In the sense of "I have an idea which may be useful in approaching problem <foo>, what do you think about it?" it is an on-going process.

I was rather assuming the second sense.

Actually, I read it as: "Is this the correct diagnosis? Doctor, may I get a
2nd opinion".

Were you asking for an alternative explanation of something in the Google Groups thread?
