They didn't release any details publicly on how it works. Such secrets hold back open source software and keep those in-the-know on the gravy train.

Given that mobile - laptop and tablet - sales now dwarf those of desktop PCs, I'd say that sort of thing is a pretty big problem. And even if mobiles-running-Linux sales are still a small % of the total mobile space, the lack of openness in releasing the specs mentioned by retina makes it all too easy for the usual favored players to engage in their beloved anticompetitive practices.

Typically, the big hardware/software vendors get early samples of new things so they can design hardware or create drivers, add support, etc.

I wonder if the open source world simply doesn't have the type of resources where they're getting early samples to do that for Linux.

I would guess that some of the same people who get an early sample for their "day job" might also be Linux contributors, but there's probably some NDA, or maybe their own workplace rules, that keep them from taking advantage of that situation.

Who knows... I'm speculating of course.

With the current CPUs it is impossible to have completely 100% open source software running at all times. Even the creators of the so called free PC cannot actually get it free. The most important parts (the booting and system controls parts) are all closed encrypted binaries decoded by the secret CPU algorithms at startup. The only way around that would be open source CPU hardware, but the resources required to compete at that level means no one will do it without wanting to make a profit.
