In my earlier post of the timings, alim=rlim=7.5M is slightly faster, but the yield is dropping off, so I don't know. Anything between 7.5M and 12M is probably OK.

But we'll probably need to sieve to about 15M or more to get the ~25M relations needed.

Ah, why not. Same as before, except now uploads go to the directory "c138-relations".

(BTW: can msieve stop/resume in the middle of a linear algebra run? A C138 will be my biggest postprocessing job yet, so it's possible that I may have to pause the job somewhere along the way.)

yes, use the -ncr switch instead of -nc or -nc2. (to perform the square root phase, you have to start msieve with the -nc3 switch after finishing -ncr.)

Yes, msieve writes checkpoints every few hours during a linear-algebra run, if you stop it and resume with

msieve -v -ncr

then it'll read the last checkpoint and carry on.

if you restart with msieve -v -nc2, it will rebuild the matrix and start again with a new random initial vector, destroying the previous work, so do remember the -ncr !!

I would be surprised if the post-processing took more than 24 hours on a quad-core.

Okay, thanks--that should do the trick.

BTW: the system I'll be running it on is not a quadcore; only a dualcore. Presumably that would make it take a little less than twice as long?

Note that the matrix must be of size at least a million to turn on checkpointing; a matrix with a million columns only needs about 2-3 hours on my test machines anyway.
