We are thinking the serious forum user gets a list of all the new posts and reads those. Most of those threads will have 2-3 new posts, so there isn't a need to show 100. It does make it a bit more difficult for someone to read a thread from beginning to end though.
Strangely, the performance hit from showing 100 posts is much less than the hit from showing the logged in users on the home page. What we have to figure out is how much of a hit each feature has so we can allocate resources responsibly. Right now we have the "new posts" feature and a stripped search feature up. Stripped, in this case, means 10 results per page for a maximum of 100 results. It was 100 results for a maximum of 1000 before. We are somehow doing this without a search index. We are using "fulltext" search which is some sort of built in MySQL thing. Maybe we need to make a list of what people need to have and how important certain features are. Right now our "order of precedence" for making feature decisions is: 1) Regular (serious) members. 2) Guests. 3) Search engines. |

I dont normally go straight to mersenneforum but thru my account at yahoo.com. I click on a post sent to me and get straight onto that post and then sign in(doubly if necessary). I think its a good security measure in the long run. Mally

Can you see where the attackers are located from the IP? Perhaps you upset some extremists with your Where is the tiolet joke?
But if they are zombies, their IP will not tell us much. |

Alexa traffic data gathered by summing up the pages visited by alexa toolbar users. Since there is a huge spike starting the beginning of october, it looks like it could be that a good chunk of new traffic coming to this site is genuine. |

It seems to me that we are no longer able to mark fora as read after the "new posts" search, but it is still possible to do that going back to the main window.
It is possible to have back such an option ? It is a more logical place to do that after having seen wich posts are not read. Thanks, Pierpaolo. |

We hope this is fixed now. It has actually been broken for a long time. It is hard to believe this isn't a default feature of the software package we use.

Slowing down the robots helps on a lot of sites. You can tell them to come visit only once every other day. MOST search engines obay like clockwork.
