I have at least two more years left before I graduate (depending on whether or not I decide to take a second major). My major is math.
If I were you and had the choice I would take up both-math and physics. In this modern world they go hand in hand and are very closely linked
like in the time of Newton which they called Philosophy.
Of course this also depends on the backing you are getting.
In my own career I had to drop the pure and take up the applied (Eng) as I lacked the financial backing and had to work my way up. It was very difficult for me and I had to attend night school. Its a destiny that I have regretted all my life but accepted it willingly.
So my advice is to go for it!

I've found my second factor after 2.966 factoring CPU years!

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out what my first factor was.

I've now completed a semicircle of LL tests (in degrees):

Code:
Account ID LL P90* Exponents Fact.P90 Exponents P90 CPU
CPU yrs LL Tested CPU yrs* w/ Factor hrs/day
-------------- ------- --------- -------- --------- -------
jinydu 342.185 180 2.966 2 2952.67
Now if I could only get that CPU hrs/day figure above 3000 again...

Default Five Years!

I've now been a Gimpster for five years!

So Jinydu, why do I have more P90 years with fewer exponents?
Code:
Account ID LL P90* Exponents Fact.P90 Exponents P90 CPU
CPU yrs LL Tested CPU yrs* w/ Factor hrs/day

Am I testing larger exponents?
(the 1849.06 is due to a full year of no crunching - I was trapped behind an unforgiving firewall,
with no dialing out unless I disconnected.)

Most probably. Most of my LL tests are probably double-checks.

A week ago today, my verification of M44 completed, confirming that M44 was in fact prime. This has been the 4th GIMPS prime I had the honour of verifying.

On that same day, I defended my Masters thesis and today I am depositing the final copy with the university so I am finished that degree and have now started working on my PhD.

Well you have done it again Jeff and may you not only be able to verify the primes but also be a participant in finding it.
Great achievement on your masters and on to the PhD. May I know what topic will you be offering?
Wish you all the best!
Mally
P.S. Your lucky number is 15/09/2006 -> 14 ->5 . So in this month your next lucky date is 24/09/2006 ->14 ->5

Last fiddled with by mfgoode on 2006-09-22 at 15:45 Reason: Adding P.S.

Thanks. I will be doing something a little different for my PhD. It will be in the biomedical engineering field, working on some devices to monitor babies in real time and alert the nurses/doctors of potential negative medical outcomes before it is too late to do something about it. We have a research partnership with the children's hopsital here in town so I'm quite excited to be working on this project.

I have managed to sneak back into 3000 CPU hours per day territory (although I may soon be exiled again):

Code:
Account ID LL P90* Exponents Fact.P90 Exponents P90 CPU
CPU yrs LL Tested CPU yrs* w/ Factor hrs/day
-------------- ------- --------- -------- --------- -------

Woo! 1000 LL tests completed, and 2400 total P90 years!
Code:
Account ID LL P90* Exponents Fact.P90 Exponents P90 CPU
CPU yrs LL Tested CPU yrs* w/ Factor hrs/day
-------------- ------- --------- -------- --------- -------
sdbardwick 1666.40 1000 740.921 951 9486.34
1000 LL's was my personal goal, so my production and Primenet rank (96) will now falter. Electricity prices here in San Diego are simply insane compared to Los Angeles; my bill went from $100 a month to over $300. I'm not completely disengaging; a few machines (about 10 GHz of P4 Northwoods) will remain active, but the cost of running the other 20+ GHz is now prohibitive .
