Default Need a big iron?

http://www.lrz-muenchen.de/services/...tuell/ali2537/

Brief summary in english: The Leibniz Computer Center in Munich is retiring a Hitachi SR8000-F1/168, consisting of 168 nodes with 9 cpus each. Power draw is around 600kW and so is thermal dissipation of course, so you better live somewhere cool and don't mind sleeping with the windows open. Available for pickup at Garching near Munich.

From what I gather, it's free - you just have to stop by and pick it up. However, the text says "Interessenten aus dem Hochschulbereich" - interested parties from Universities. Not sure what exactly that means, but I suppose you'd need to convince them that you'll use the machine for academia rather than commercial purposes.

I think that will be a heavy enough expense already for most people

How much would the shipping cost, if some one was to move it to USA? Any idea?
How big is it? How many GHz is it equivalent to?
Just trying to calculate if it is a worth while purchase for anyone interested.

edit:I don't know if this is written on the webpage because, I can't read German.

If the CPUs are 375MHz Power 3's, each is equivalent to maybe a 450MHz Pentium 2 (obviously they're not exactly equivalent, that's just a guess). For heavy-duty floating point, though, they do a lot better (two parallel FMAC units). Even if that doesn't sound like a lot, the complete system has 168*9 of them. Big iron indeed!

The volume is enormous: 25 racks for the CPUs and 20 more for disks, each about the size of 2 ordinary 19" racks. I wonder if it comes with software.

The page says the software licenses are expiring, so you'd have to get your own OS, compilers etc. from Hitachi. Dunno if any free software could be made to run on this box.

Just install WinXP!
[/AOL mode]

Hm, electricity costs are included where I live ATM. Would they get suspicious if I asked for a 300V three-phase current supply?

Where will you store it. My room is too small compared to the monster. I will have to start living in the garage.

Any room inside the case? Maybe you could live in it or also use it as a dry sauna.

I can see the questions already. "How do I set the affinity for the x'th processor?" "Are they sharing any cache?" :)
