I don't know what you mean by "manual tests". That term has no meaning within the context of the Number Field Sieve.

I suggest that you learn more about the method. There are references in the FAQ which can be found from our home page www.nfsnet.org .

Although the mathematics are more complex for the Number Field Sieve, the general methodology is quite similar to that of the (earlier) Quadratic Sieve. Perhaps that would be a good place to start.

Perhaps what is meant is: can I acquire a block to be sieved by some method that does not require me to be on-line; can I then run the siever on that block and, finally, can I then submit the results by some non-standard means such as ftp or sneakernet?

I agree: until we know what is meant by the question it is difficult to give a useful answer.
