Default P4 Temperature Throttle

Hello all,

I'm running Prime95 on a P4 Laptop, but it goes slower than my girlfriends Pentium III. I think this is because of the Temperature Throttle, because it goes pretty fast for a few minutes and then the throttle kicks in and lowers the CPU power of my Laptop because it's getting too hot.

That is what my question is about. I think that if I could set Prime95 to use only 75% of my CPU (for example), it would go slightly slower, but I think the Temperature Throttle will not kick in then, so in the end it would go faster than it does now.

So, is there any way to slow down Prime95 a bit to release the stress on my CPU so it doesn't get so hot anymore ?

Thank you,
Axel Fox.

I believe desktop P4 temp throttle comes in at 70C. Not 100% sure if this is the same for notebook chips.

Are you running your P4 mobile at a 'reduced power' mode where the P4 actually runs at less Mhz than it should be?

Hi,

in one of the newer versions (around 23.3 I believe) a prime.ini command called Throttle=n was implemented. n is the number of miliseconds the program will sleep after each iteration. That unfortunately does not affect the factoring part. But you could use SkipTrialFactoring=1 to not factor at all. Put both commands in the prime.ini in your prime95 directory and it should run cooler.

Hth, Matthes
