Is it true that prime95 does a sound if a new Mersenne is found ? I would be curious to listen to it (without waiting to find a new Mersenne prime ... )
Thanks |

Well, use a smaller one, not the last one found.
http://www.mersennewiki.org/index.php/Mersenne_primes The real small ones don't work, IIRC. Maybe try one around M20. |

Does this work with command prompt in Windows XP? (DOS is no longer existant in newer Windows pcs). I tried the command and it made a sound for each time I typed in CtrlG but it wasn't anything I would call pleasant.

CTRL-G is the standard ASCII "bell" command; back in the day of teletypes, it activated a physical bell. Nowadays it generally causes a single beep from the system speaker, but it varies in character from system to system. It is the lowest common denominator for audible alerts; not pretty but essentially universally available.

I wonder how long it will take until you can download it as a ringtone...
I tried a large prime long time ago and remembered it differently (a bit faster and lower frequency?) I just noticed that the lltesting is stopping while the noise is on. But that will not happen often. Anyway, the variable 'SilentVictory' sounds cool. edit: typos. Last fiddled with by biwema on 2006-01-22 at 18:59 |

That's almost the exact sound one of my computers was making last night.
Too bad it was the CPU overheat alarm after the mounting bracket broke on the CPU fan. |
