Could someone tell me what the bold section of the above means?

I have a few things in my existing i7 I could use in a new one. Compact disc drive, GPU, liquid cooler, 2 NVMe SSD's, and a 1,000W PSU.

With a 1000w PSU have you considered doubling you Mersenne throughput by simply adding a secondhand Radeon VII? People here will tell you which model of VII to avoid.

If I may give some advice (from some years of experience). My apologies if I'm telling you how to chew gum.

Take the best from your current build and move it to your new one.

But try to budget buying new (possibly less capable) kit to place in your old machine.

I have found it can be *very* useful to have two (or more) machines online (or, at least, able to be brought online when needed).

Being in a place where spare parts are not always 24 hours of shipping away, I try to also have spare PSUs and monitors in my inventory.

Have fun building your next workstation. It can be a great deal of fun! Just don't let out the "magic blue smoke." 8^)

Do you have knowledge about how a VII Pro can be configured for best throughput per Watt? This would be relevant to this thread if storm5510 might consider either a VII or VII Pro.

Last fiddled with by kruoli on 2023-06-29 at 21:25 Reason: Wrong colour.

Under Linux there are 5 settings ROCm from 250W down to ~150w? (Maybe lower). I generally run my VII (in the winter) at setting 3 which equates to 200w.

Oh, I missed the important bit: That system is running Windows 10, which is needed for other things. Much more importantly, I was not able to configure clocks directly, especially to lower the savings on memory and GPU independently.

Have you tried MSI Afterburner? Will it work with your card?

I am on a fixed income so it will have to be a piece here and there.

I would rather not do "less capable."

I have two HP workstations plus this i7. Then there is a laptop. It never gets used and just lays around. This i7 and the Xeon HP do 90%, or more, of what I run.

I have extra parts, but some are not usable. Old low wattage PSU's from the Pentium era. I need to toss those. Old RAM modules galore. I can't remember that they were used in. I have an older Xeon CPU laying here on my desk. I suspect it came from something I parted out and tossed. Hard drives aplenty. I don't know how many. Several are at or above 1TB. Two 6's and an enterprise 4. I need to put the large ones on eBay.
