Well... Another question then:

If I for example leave home for a couple of hours with my lap running math-stuff, will I risk to see the house on flames when I return?

I know this sounds stupid but I'm paranoid and that's kinda what I meant with my first question...

Yes, you will risk seeing the house on flames when you return.

That is the case, whether or not you leave your laptop running, or whether you even have a laptop.

What people have been trying to indicate is that the additional risk to your property appears to be extremely small. Some of us have been running laptops 24/7 without any noticeable damage either to the laptops or their surroundings.

Okay, I admit my post was a case of grand paranoia but thanks anyway!'

I was just thinking if, in such a case, my laptop would be blamed as the source of the problems.

Of course sh*t happens every day and I'm delighted to hear that there's not much risk difference between running it and not running it!

I run it practically 24/7 on several laptops. My Toshiba Celeron 2800 would often overheat on me over the summer until I got a cooling pad - no problems since.

Hi OmbooHankvald,

I inherited a Pentium III Laptop with a battery that lasts 3 minutes. So I dedicated it to GIMPS doing trial factoring. I have it hooked up to a constant power supply sitting on top of a bookshelf. Works great... no fires.... ...seems safe to me? Tested 70+ exponents and on she runs.....

I was also concerned about heat when I bought my laptop, so what I did was to also buy a fan pad to put under the computer at all times. I got mine at Best Buy but you can get these almost anywhere. They can make a pretty big difference.
