Well. . . when I arose this morning I found it labeled as -16F(-26C) outside and the machine was nowhere to be found.
![]() The real disappointment is that it is the third best of the entire farm, with dual 6c/12t Xeons. But, alas, it appears to be a fair weather worker. To end on a good note (while hoping not to jinx anything), the rest of the shed appears to be performing well. |

The temps have been fluctuating as low as -20(F) and up into the 40's(F) and so far I've found a workable solution:
- I removed the main case fan. I actually found one of its fins in the bottom of the case, so it will need replacing, anyway. - I closed the main holes, such as drive bays. - I left the power supply fan alone, although it may be big enough to supply sufficient air flow for the "three weeks" of summer. - I tasked 8 threads to factordb "elf" duty on a 24/7 schedule, using only the remaining 16 for main factoring work (ecmpi and CADO-NFS server/client). It's been a little over a month with this setup and I'm hopeful it will keep plugging along. Thanks for all the ideas. |
