Yeah - watching my son play Call of Duty on his big monitor in 4K, or whatever, actually makes me nauseous.

I was into land combat simulations back then - Armored Fist, Mechwarrior2, M1 Tank Platoon II, etc. on the PC.

Lode runner and sokoban - that’s going way back!..

I remember my high school friend helping me write a silly program on that thing. I recall I wanted the screen to flash random colors, I think going from slow to fast.

After it did that, I made it do some random calculations that filled the screen with characters. Something about POKE (123,23)….whatever that meant - I totally forgot.

The problem was my “random” command rnd, I think, made the same characters every time, not random ones! I memorized the little program - I think I made it loop infinitely. Then, when in K-Mart at the electronics section where they had VIC 20s on display, I’d type in that stupidity and make it look like the VIC 20 was freaking out.

Wow….I haven’t thought about that since 1983!!!

Yes!!! The first DOS MW2 versions might be considered crude but the 3D accelerated versions of MW2 still hold up today. It was the cool soundtrack music that played during the missions that helped make that game a classic.

I loaded up the 3D Titanium edition on my retro PC as soon as I rebuilt it!

The random command had to be initialized. It was common to use X = RND(-TI) to seed it with a more or less random value. TI is the timer.

I do remember a little something about that. I’m sure you’re right. Those commands are familiar!!

We were kind of pranksters back then and I wanted to write programs that made it look like the computer was about to have a meltdown.

We did one on his Radio Shack TRS-80 Model III where we made the floppy drive make a clanking noise, at the same time made the little speaker make weird tones, and I think we simultaneously made it execute progressively difficult math problems until it errored out.

Why? Because we were kids and we thought it was funny!

DOSBox works pretty well in my experience.
