I (finally) got through to tech support for the computer company and they walked me through a Windows 10 reinstall, and that did the trick. The computer is up and running again.

I got home a few minutes ago after being gone most of the past 48 hours to find my newest computer stuck on a screen that says "preparing automatic repair," and checking my GIMPS activity log on that computer, it looks like it's been that way for about the past 24 hours. I'm going to try to reload Windows one more time, and if the problem persists I'll have to assume it's a hardware issue and exchange the computer.
