As we have discussed before I am of the advanced enough age to remember learning and using that command (except it was NOOP in those days) on a computer with 16 registers and occupying a whole campus-room. I even recall one of my classmates asking our teacher what was the point of the operator and the teacher being stomped.
I think I only ever used it as a place-holder in a code for future routines.
More recently I recall using NBSP in webpage source-codes to make a page look correct across different browser. I find it an invaluable tool given the different ways different browsers render a page.

NOP is not the same as nothing. So any comparison to the "statue" isn't valid. NOP actually has valid use cases and is clearly something.

A statue that exists only in your mind is just plan silly. And paying for it is even stupider. Did the buyer demand that everyone else erase it from their minds? We wouldn't want those freeloaders to be able to enjoy it without paying. Why not call it a fully functional perpetual motion machine instead? Or a block of solid platinum. Or a USB key holding 1m bitcoin. Those would be "worth" much more.

As dumb as the buyer may (or may not) be, with all the worldwide attention, there is a very good chance he can recover his investment many-times-over by selling his Certificate-of-Authenticity (and yes there is one) to the highest bidder.

In the same vein, I was visiting some friends in L.A. in the 70s. We decided to visit a museum. The only detail I can remember about the museum was a particular exhibit that had 2 paintings by some artist. You may have already guessed it by the gist of this thread that 1 'painting' was completely black and the other was completely white. This was not some corner gallery but a respected museum. We stood there making snarky cracks and laughing when a guard told us to keep it down or we would be tossed out. We couldn't control our mirth ( the best laugh is a repressed one ) so we just left.

Inn order to be able to appreciate abstract art, you have to stop thinking like a programmer/mathematician and pretend-to-think like an art critic instead.

You might very well make much more money that way.
