This is true, but it is a question of priority. If you must cut electric use, this method will definitely accomplish that goal.

Eco mode is probably the least hands on way to underclock and should do the job fine, your 65W TDP 3600 will run at a new target of 45W TDP and naturally settle on a lower clock in a better spot on the efficiency curve.


Setting a fixed underclock is probably the best solution for predictable workloads like prime95 but it can't always be done through bios and requires tinkering to find an optimal balance.

What is the power consumption of your computer when it is idle? The clock speed of the CPU would probably fall to a value well below that you usefully use for anything. I do wonder if the amount of electricity you could save by tweaking things will make it worthwhile.

Depending on the number of memory channels that your CPU has, it would perform better with one DIMM per channel, or multiple of that. So reducing RAM might really reduce its performance. Any expenditure of buying different RAM will probably cost you more money than the electricity you could save over the lifetime of the computer.

Something else to bear in mind, which is certainly relevant for the PRP tests I run, but maybe not for you, is that the server gives smaller exponents to faster computers. So slowing my machine down, may mean that the server gives be bigger exponents, which take longer to test, so use more electricity.

ryzenadj is just for ryzen processors with an igpu (if not entirely ryzen mobile). A quick search indicates that eco mode may not show up as an option until PBO is (strangely) enabled; if you've already disabled it, enable it so eco mode can disable it ;)

In Windows 7 and 10, some CPU's can be regulated in the power settings, but not all. I can with my i7, but not a Xeon or i5. Both of those are older with limited settings. I keep my i7 at 99%. This shuts off the turbo mode and locks the core clock to 3.6 GHz. At 100%, it can go above 4 GHz. It gets quite hot like this, 80°C or higher. I've seen Prime95 take it above 85°C. At 99%, it stays in the upper 60's. The performance difference is slight.

I do not know if Linux has something comparable or not. Someone else here may be able to answer this.

These are the approaches I would take. 6 cores at reduced clock (~3 GHz) are still going to saturate that 3200 memory very well.

I tried several possibilities in the Bios. All in all there is not much progress.
I think, I will run 200 DCs this year and switch off the computer in the hot season.
