I don't think the merging of the threads went well. Now I can't see things that were written.

How long does it take a Radeon VII to do a wavefront (108 million exponent) PRP test? I can currently do one per day on my CPUs - each one takes two days, but with two workers, that's an average of one PRP test per day.
There's some chance I will be able to dramatically speed that up when I resolve what I believe is a motherboard fault that's preventing me using all 6 memory channels on one of the CPUs. Dell will not look at the machine, as I can't reproduce the fault with the configuration the machine was supplied in (2 x 8 GB RAM sticks). I need to try to add a 5th DIMM before the problem occurs. The 8 GB DIMMs are £250 each from Dell, so it would cost me £750 to reproduce the fault with Dell DIMMs. Given I have 12 x 32 GB Kingston DIMMs, each of which cost less than 8 GB Dell DIMMS, I have no need for 8 GB DIMMs. Last fiddled with by drkirkby on 2021-04-29 at 22:17 |

Personally I think the threads are sufficiently different they should not have been merged 1) One was asking someone to build a binary of a specific program (gpuowl) as I was having problems building on CentOS. 2) The second thread was asking if GPUs can do PRP tests, and is discussing the relative speeds of GPUs vs CPUs. They seemed sufficiently different to me to deserve to be on separate threads. Anyway, they are merged, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Dave |

I'm ditching CentOS/Redhat. I only used CentOS as it was needed for a bit of commerical software. I will use Debian or similar on servers, and Ubuntu or similar on the workstation. I think CentOS will die a death now.

Until Debian 11 is out, I recommend Fedora or Ubuntu for running gpuOwl, maybe Mint too.

The easiest distro to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers is probably Ubuntu.
Plus, the "askubuntu" site is pretty helpful.

[Work thread Apr 30 02:22] Resuming primality test of M77936863 using AVX-512 FFT length 4200K, Pass1=1920, Pass2=2240, clm=1, 26 threads [Work thread Apr 30 02:22] Iteration: 1047 / 77936863 [0.00%]. I have a serious memory problem. I don't know if that impacts GIMPS or not. My reason is that I can't put 6 DIMMs (one per channel) in the sockets, as any attempt to have DIMMS in sockets 4 and 5 of CPU0 result in an unbootable system. I'm sure there is a motherboard fault, but I cant prove it without paying silly money for Dell RAM, |
