A whole bunch of women did ground-breaking work in astrophysics decades earlier. Annie Jump Cannon and Henrietta Swan Levitt are only two out of several. |

I think the author of the article meant it as "First Lady (to the President/Nobel prize winners)", an often forgotten person. The wording also indicates this, because otherwise "First Woman" would be more applicable.

Maybe it is a case of bad punctuation. U.S. Postage Stamp Will Honor the First "Lady of Physics". In the comments by USPS officials they indicated that they hope to issue more stamps honouring scientists and with an emphasis on diversity. So she would be first in the category "Ladies of Physics". The portrait on the stamp as shown here bears a striking resemblance to the cover illustration of Madame Wu Chien-Shiung: The First Lady of Physics Research by Tsai-Chien Chiang.

EDIT: Just to be clear, "the First Lady of Physics" was an honorific nickname bestowed on Chien-Shiung Wu during her lifetime. She was also known as "Queen of Nuclear Research" and "the Chinese Madame Curie." Have you guys heard about the possible Large Hadron Collider physics discovery? I guess it'll be a few months before there's any official paper, they want to get that special odds number up past 5 before they claim it as an actual discovery. Sorry I can't remember the right word.
I'm only half-joking when I say,"Is my flying car finally going to become a reality?" I honestly have no idea what this fifth force actually does, if it exists. |
