Actually, the installer is easy enough. Run "emerge package-name". If you like a pointy-clicky interface, use porthole.

When I used Mint, it came with a horrendous file manager called Thunar. It doesn't show the file hierarchies, and makes finding and placing things really hard.

I find xfe to be much more intuitive, but it is buggy.

Is there actually a good file manager for X?

Thunar shows the file hierarchies for me. Go to View->Side Bar->Tree.

When moving stuff around I generally use cp(1) or mv(1) but open two Thunar windows if a GUI version is required. Finding stuff by filename or creation/access time is almost always locate(1); by content it is grep(1).

Almost everything is buggy IME.

I was talking about installing Gentoo from scratch! There is now a nice tool that walks beginners through the engaging installation process.

Those aren't for X. Whenever I put the new minions in front of a keyboard they only want to use the mouse.

Almost everything? I agree in principle, but blatantly obvious bugs and silliness is different from subtle and weird bugs, and xfe has lots of the former.

Next distribution I want to try out. Kali Linux a Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at advanced Penetration Testing and Security Auditing .

My choice is Devuan for the last year or so. Both at home and work.

It's systemd free, snap free and for some people that matters. Otherwise it's Debian based,
ie. the same as Ubuntu, so in most, though not all, cases the selection of packages is the
same.

So how does freebsd fare? I remember using it in the last century millennium and remember webhosts using it. What does distinguish it from Linux?
