This is not hijacking, as this is discussing the LL-DC assignment policy (proposed by George) impacted by the new PRP-VDF work.

The thread was about the impact of PRP-VDF on the strategic DCs and TCs and DC's in general. It started out in the strategic DC and TC thread.
Discussion on the merits of how to how upgrade users, the math behind the verification, and issues with runs are off-topic. |

Popular anti-rape phraseology in the US these days is relevant, I think:
If it's not a yes, it's a no. And the point is that silence does not imply consent. You don't get to say, "Welp, they didn't say no, therefore I can have my way with them." No means no, and if it's not a yes, it's a no. No forced upgrades. But I would remove LL first time tests from the available work types the very day V30 is put on the Mersenne downloads page, and combine PRP and LL first time results. I don't think a 200% bonus for PRPs is necessary. Give anyone requesting a first time LL an LL DCs. Last fiddled with by Aramis Wyler on 2020-07-31 at 03:28 |

I would give them a while to transition, 3-6 months after v30 is official.
The server should include additional messages akin to Code:
PLEASE UPGRADE TO THE LATEST VERSION OF PRIME95. It includes an important major testing upgrade. Machines not upgraded soon will be no longer given first time tests. |

Hi.
I have several ideas. 1) How to obtain the consent of users to upgrade their software. We all have the page "View the CPU's in your account" (https://www.mersenne.org/cpus/) The consent checkbox may be added on it and each user can confirm the choice for all computers at once. 2) Second stage - silent users because of any reason. At first - publish an official announcement that types of work "LL first test", "LL-WR" and "LL-100M" will be abolished soon and users should upgrade their software to v30 or switch to another type of work. Otherwise them turns into "GIMPS - what makes sense [default]". After that LL-D welcomes :-) This way is legally used by some providers when changing tariff plans. 3) Prime95 - rebrand into - Prime2020 "95" and "2020" can be reasonably considered the major number in software versioning. |

#2 is being done from a server side eventually. You get the task you are given. #3 Rebranding GIMPS and Prime95 is not on the table until George leaves the land of the living. |

Perhaps a gentler way to put it is, it's George's creation, and he can name it whatever he likes. It's a quarter-century-long development project, roughly.
Also, the version numbering is tied in with that of the gwnum library used also in other programs, as I recall. Last fiddled with by kriesel on 2020-08-18 at 00:26 |

Over the next few months there may be some acceleration in the DC progress as the server now no longer hands out FTC LL assignment, but will hand out LL DC instead.
