And that's something which should change, IMHO. Particularly for new workers training to enter into the ICT support workforce.

Linux is actually really easy to use, so long as you can type. None of this "where do I click again???" (which seems to move around every few years/versions) nonsense.

Quickly... I found this article rather telling: Microsoft: we were wrong about open source.

This "on the record" admission will be useful when convincing the PHBs that Open Source is safe to use. I actually had a recent client hesitant to deploy CentOS, asking "is anyone even using it?"...

And learn a foreign language at an advanced age. You cracked me up long ago when you asked what the Windows analog for obtaining help to the linux "man" was. MS named it the terribly obscure command "help" (or the alternative, whatever-command /?). Asking Windows what version it is uses the terribly obscure "ver". Searching the web for the linux equivalent led to obvious things like uname -a. Obvious to you maybe.
NT and even Windows95 have had local scripting and remote administration provisions for decades too.
Linux has its own compatibility and user relearning issues; which distro, which shell, which GUI is installed on this one?
https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=family-tree
https://bash.cyberciti.biz/guide/What_is_Linux_Shell
https://www.tecmint.com/best-linux-d...-environments/
Then add in version numbering: https://www.tecmint.com/find-linux-k...ersion-number/
Talk about a diverse ecosystem!

Yup. It's how we like it!

BTW, before Powershell, was there a way to get the *nix equivalent of "update" on a Wincrows text-based console shell? Both the time since last boot, as well as recent historical load averages.

And about learning a new language, I've taught myself two new ones in the last week. I've fought not ever having to deal with Winblows for years, but I'm now having to. And, finally, it isn't actually that bad. Vim is even available as a separate install...

You'll never see me deploy it as a server, though. "Seats" for workers only.

Not exactly the same, but you may want to make friends with systeminfo and tasklist, & perfmon logging to file.

(Why does this remind me of classmates who would ask for help with their homework? And where's my beer?)

And with the latest versions of Windows 10 you type or click on help and Edge opens with a (almost always not very) relevant search result, you are continuously nagged about
- setting Edge to be your default browser,
- setting Bing to be your default search provider which means it is used to search your LOCAL files and folders !
- logging in to an MS account (it is even worse than that : I had to apply several hacks not to have my local account switched to an Microsoft account each time I had to log in to a Microsoft account to access some very ordinary Microsoft Site. And no, there were no options to skip it in the dialogues.)
...

Even for some basic settings the complexity of Windows 10 is enormous : just try to fix the navigation pane in Explorer to remove the duplication of external disks and other irrelevant entries : it implies changing permissions and then values on arcane CLSID's in the registry at different places (don't forget Wow6432Node.) The sheer number of those is boggling. The complexity of Explorer (changing the displayed name or the appearance for folders, hiding them even is you set it to see system, "super-system" and hidden files, the CLI gives the real names though and the /A switch is very useful with the dir command.)

Linux can have the same problems : having to edit a 300 KB system file to restore arrowheads to the scrollbars and not being sure an update will not overwrite your settings (one is not always asked about overwriting or keeping some setting files.)

Windows 10 (like Android or iOS) might be good for people using their computer like they use a phone, they never delve in command line stuff, in Linux (as with Windows, Android or iOS) they would just use the help button in the application just as in Windows.

Most (thank you, I know there are exceptions ;-) OS's are made for the general public, people not even aware there is something like a CLI. And now the general trend to have the GUI's and also the websites adapted to touchscreen devices on which the active application is full screen. And the chosen styles take an enormous space : for instance since the "modernisation" of my banks website I have to scroll on the log in page on a full HD screen scaled at 100 %.

One thing that really bugs me is that many Linux apps do not have any useful help at all. Very often the only thing you get when clicking on the help button is the version name and number of the software.

Geeks already know how to RTFM and to join specialist fora so it might not be such an issue for them. RealUsersโ„ข are beginning to learn that help is generally best found with a search engine.

Some of the hardware manufacturers are not exactly guiltless either, with preloaded shovelware/trialware, mammoth driver downloads and installs, etc on new hardware. Marketing has won out over engineering and gone far too far, succeeding often in annoying, not winning over, hypothetical customer prospects.

NVIDIA gpu driver packages are routinely over a half gigabyte now and don't always clean up after themselves. (See comments in various threads about needing sometimes the equivalent of determination, pick, rock drill, wheelbarrow, and dynamite to completely remove.)

AMD gpu Windows driver installs on Windows I"ve observed to include a system restart without warning. Not so friendly when there's a cpu-maximizing prime95 instance running at the time. Download size 600MB.
Vendors are no longer including driver discs in the box with the retail gpus; just a little card for where to download it. So glad I finally got off DSL (Darn slow link).

That's fine if the system and your internet are working, or you have another way with which to find out how to fix the broken one. I suppose those with only one trundle off to the local library to borrow theirs. Except it's been locked for over two months... Time to phone a friend or techy relative.

Called "Smart Hands and Eyes" in the industry. Also known as "remote human".

"OK, type this, exactly... "su -" and hit return. Enter your root password. What do you mean you don't know your root password!?!?!?

One if the nice things about Linux is the full "Manual" package is generally installed. So running the "man" command (short for "manual" TUI -- *nix geeks like short commands because in the early days we could often type faster than the comms channel could exchange bits).

Code:
$ man man
MAN(1) Manual pager utils MAN(1)

NAME
man - an interface to the on-line reference manuals

SYNOPSIS
       man [-C file] [-d] [-D] [--warnings[=warnings]] [-R encoding]
       [-L locale] [-m system[,...]] [-M path] [-S list] [-e extenโ€
       sion] [-i|-I] [--regex|--wildcard] [--names-only] [-a] [-u]
       [--no-subpages] [-P pager] [-r prompt] [-7] [-E encoding]
       [--no-hyphenation] [--no-justification] [-p string] [-t]
       [-T[device]] [-H[browser]] [-X[dpi]] [-Z] [[section]
       page[.section] ...] ...
man -k [apropos options] regexp ...
       man -K [-w|-W] [-S list] [-i|-I] [--regex] [section] term ...
man -f [whatis options] page ...
       man -l [-C file] [-d] [-D] [--warnings[=warnings]] [-R encodโ€
       ing] [-L locale] [-P pager] [-r prompt] [-7] [-E encoding]
       [-p string] [-t] [-T[device]] [-H[browser]] [-X[dpi]] [-Z]
       file ...
       man -w|-W [-C file] [-d] [-D] page ...
       man -c [-C file] [-d] [-D] page ...
       man [-?V]

DESCRIPTION
man is the system's manual pager. Each page argument given
to man is normally the name of a program, utility or funcโ€
tion. The manual page associated with each of these arguโ€
ments is then found and displayed. A section, if provided,
will direct man to look only in that section of the manual.
The default action is to search in all of the available secโ€
       tions following a pre-defined order ("1 1p 8 2 3 3p 3pm 4 5 6
       7 9 0p n l p o 1x 2x 3x 4x 5x 6x 7x 8x" by default, unless
overridden by the SECTION directive in /etc/man_db.conf), and
to show only the first page found, even if page exists in
       several sections.
Code:
$ man -k nvidia
nouveau (4) - NVIDIA video driver
nvidia-cuda-mps-control (1) - NVIDIA CUDA Multi Process Service man...
nvidia-modprobe (1) - Load the NVIDIA kernel module and create NVI...
nvidia-persistenced (1) - A daemon to maintain persistent software ...
nvidia-settings (1) - configure the NVIDIA graphics driver
nvidia-smi (1) - NVIDIA System Management Interface program
nvidia-xconfig (1) - manipulate X configuration files for the NVI...
