There is one aspect to Windows 10 I really do not like. Location sharing. The little bullseye icon which appears in the system tray now and then when it is sending where I am. It can be turned off. If so, then the messages begin in the notification area. It is probably GPS coordinates. M$ does not need to know where I am.

They probably already know where you are from your IP if they have access to google's street view wifi scan data.

We check our "privacy" settings every time we do updates because sometimes they are "conveniently" changed.
We do updates once a month because the update process, if left to do what it wants, updates things at really inopportune times.

I learned something else just a few minutes ago. By default, MS Edge starts as a background process when a W10 system boots. It can be disabled, which I did. I never use it so I do not feel like it should run. |

I think Chrome puts in startup items, too. I have Chrome now perforce, for some uses, but I installed and trashed it with extreme prejudice a few times before the current installation.

Thread hijack alert!
So I am the proud owner of a macbook pro with a i9-9880H processor. The one on the right in George's link above: https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/16-inch Of course I installed Prime95 - took me a while to remember I had to drag the icon to Applications ![]() A few questions: 1) What is the recommended setting for Throttle. I find it gets really hot if I leave it running full blast or even Throttle=50. 2) I assume I should turn HT off? I ran benchies and for 3M FFTs I found that 1 worker without HT gave the best throughput. OTOH given that I am running with a throttle parameter I'm not looking to maximize throughput, just the best work/energy set up. 3) Is there a good - free - CPU temp sensor for the Mac? 4) When running two workers, in my Worker Windows the first worker is getting 4 cores and the second 3. Why? [Edit: I just fixed this in prime.txt.] 5) Is there any affinity setting I need to change? I assume not because on startup I get a message: OS does not support setting affinity. PS: On the theme of privacy and security it was fun yet uncomfortable pairing up my iPhone with the macbook. I can now do a handoff which is eerie, a small bit like Minority Report. Current MacBooks often struggle with thermals. One reason why is: The fans will spin as slow as possible the entire time, so the machine will stay around or above 90 °C most of the time, even when only doing light work. And since Prime95 really pushes the CPU, the thermal solution by Apple will struggle even more keeping up, especially with their choice of fan curve.

Yes my experience has been that the fans do nothing for about 2-3 mins after starting Prime95. Then they spin up and stay at full blast and yet the laptop keeps getting hotter. I have to turn Prime95 off to let the laptop cooldown. Also it looks like either Throttle is not being respected or the iteration times ignore throttling.

I don't know about Macs, but in the PC world, throttling works by starting and stopping work. This causes many heat-cool cycles. Instead, try running fewer cores to find a reasonable temp.
