The only thing related is fan idle, which was set to low originally. The fan was full speed always at that time. Now it seems to be working properly, speeding up and slowing. Perhaps I should crank it up again. I seem to recall it running full speed back when the machine was one of my top performers.

Well, I don't expect to spend much more time on this. But, here is a comparison between the two virtual twin machines. The one on the left is the "good" one. The fan on the "other" one is idling higher by setting. Possibly of note, some of the sensors go to -128 on the faulty machine, then reappear - maybe that's the trouble - faulty sensors. Both machines show the CPUs running at 3000 MHz with very brief drops as far as 800 MHz as shown via 0.1 second watch of lscpu on each:
