Rest in peace John Conway!

(not long ago, I was posting this, now I feel a bit guilty, maybe I should have STFU...)

Leslie Ann Jones, 67, and her husband, Thomas E. Johnson, 69

Around last Christmas, I posted about an attorney (Karen Daniel) who was killed in Oak Park, IL. The lady was walking her dog, and was hit by a pickup truck. That death was accidental.

These weren't.

Medical examiner rules death of Oak Park attorneys homicides, reports couple was stabbed to death
Quote:
Two prominent attorneys who were found dead inside their Oak Park home on Monday evening were stabbed to death, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

On Wednesday evening, the medical examiner ruled both Leslie Ann Jones, 67, and her husband, Thomas E. Johnson, 69, were killed as a result of "multiple sharp force injuries." Both deaths were ruled homicides.

Johnson was particularly well-known for his work as a hearing officer for the Chicago Police Board, and also represented late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington for a time.

In his role on the Police Board, he oversaw the hearings for four officers accused of covering up the investigation into the 2014 Laquan McDonald shooting. He also presided over the hearing of an officer who shot and killed 55-year-old Bettie Jones and 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier during a confrontation with LeGrier in 2016.
<snip>
Johnson and Jones, both graduates of Harvard Law School, were partners in the downtown law firm of Johnson, Jones, Snelling, Gilbert & Davis. Jones specialized in health care, civil rights and real estate law, while Johnson worked on issues of social justice and corporate accountability, litigating cases all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

It was drawn to my attention by axn, to whom I am grateful.

Richard and I worked together for several years on the second incarnation of NFSNET. We met on two occasions: first at a conference in Banff (Canada, not Scotland) where we were joined by dleclair. He and Nancy had driven up from Austin, a journey which took them several days. Our second meeting took place a few years later when he drove over to Houston to introduce some FlyBase people to an excellent TexMex restaurant. On the latter occasion he picked up a group of jet-lagged Brits from the hotel where we were staying and then got seriously lost on the Houston streets. On the third time going past our hotel, one of our companions suggested stopping the car and waiting for the restaurant to go past us.

CBS Sunday Morning show had him in an in memorium section (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/some-of...us-04-19-2020/) for those lost to the virus.

Sometimes it takes a bit of distance (and a second read) to appreciate Paul's (or as he will say, his anonymous source's) sardonic New-Orlean-jazz-funeral humour.

One has to wonder, considering the high profile Police oversight cases Johnson had been involved in, whether there will be genuine investigation of these murders. After all, there is the code of omerta silence within the mafia Thin Blue Line of Heroes.

Gene Deitch
Quote:
PRAGUE (AP) β€” Gene Deitch, an American Oscar-winning illustrator, animator, film director and producer has died. He was 95.

His Czech publisher, Petr Himmel, told The Associated Press Deitch died unexpectedly during the night from Thursday to Friday in his apartment in Prague's Little Quarter neighborhood. No further details were given.

Deitch's movie "Munro" won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960. He was also nominated for the same award twice in 1964 for "Here's Nudnik" and "How to Avoid Friendship."

Earlier, he had created the "Tom Terrific" series, while the "Sidney's Family Tree," which he co-produced was nominated for an Academy Award in 1958.
I can remember watching Tom Terrific on TV like it was yesterday!

I wish I could remember recent things that well...

If you have never seen "Munro," watch it. That's an order!
