Tom Dempsey

(CNN)Tom Dempsey, a journeyman NFL kicker who despite missing the toes on his right foot set a field goal record that stood for more than four decades, has died of coronavirus, according to reports.

He was born without toes on his right foot and with no fingers on his right hand. To compensate, he wore a custom, flat-front kicking shoe that ended where his toes were supposed to begin.

On November 8, 1970, Dempsey's basement-dwelling Saints were losing 17-16 to the playoff-bound Detroit Lions at home in Tulane Stadium. With only seconds left, safety Joe Scarpati took the snap and Dempsey booted a 63-yarder, shattering Bert Rechichar's record of 56 yards, which had stood for 17 years.

In 1974, the NFL moved to discourage long kicks like Dempsey's by moving the goal posts 10 yards, to the back of the end zone, and giving opposing teams the ball at the spot of the kick after a missed field goal.
A few years later, the league mandated that kickers' shoes "must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a normal kicking shoe."

She was a dispatch rider in WW2, you know - very athletic in real life as well as onscreen. My favorite Cathy Gale bit in The Avengers came after she left the series, in a Diana Rigg episode which was apparently shot during the filming of Goldfinger -- Steed says to Emma Peel (roughly), "I've just received a holiday card from Mrs. Gale -- whatever could she be doing in Kentucky?"

John Prine

John Prine, the ingenious singer-songwriter who explored the heartbreaks, indignities and absurdities of everyday life in "Angel from Montgomery," "Sam Stone," "Hello in There" and scores of other indelible tunes, died Tuesday at the age of 73.

His family announced his death from complications from the coronavirus; he died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Linda Tripp

WASHINGTON (AP) — Linda Tripp, whose secretly taped conversations with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky provided evidence of an affair with President Bill Clinton that led to his impeachment, died Wednesday. She was 70.

Tripp's death was confirmed by attorney Joseph Murtha, but he provided no details. She had been treated for breast cancer in 2001.

The creatively voracious music producer Hal Willner, who for decades selected the music used in "Saturday Night Live" sketches, died Tuesday, one day after his 64th birthday. He had symptoms consistent with those caused by COVID-19.
