Hello, I am french and I think my computer is not working with good options ... and it works no fast !
I am with windows xp sp2 AMD SEMPRON (TM) 3000+ (1,99 ghz) 1 Go RAM I am with 23.8.1 Mersenne test version of software to go faster and I have tried to modify cpu options : 24 h per day work 128 MB daytime (10:00 to 20:00) 256 MB nighttime On cpu settings and information I have : cpu information AMD Sempron (TM) 3000+ cpu speed : 1988,62 MHz cpu features ; rdtsc, cmov, prefetch, mmx, sse L1 cache size : 64 kb L2 cache size : 512 kb But no change ... it seems to be not fast ... Exemple I have actually : iteration 2110000/26510879 per iteration time 0.144 sec Is it normal speed ? What can do to go faster ? Merci J.Harismendy |

I'm not totally sure for the iteration time, but if at all, it should be <20% slower than what one might expect.
There is a newer version available that improves performance, but I don't know about its status - whether it is still beta or already granted for general use. Maybe someone else can provide more information on this particular topic? De rien! Dennis |

Version 24.11 can be downloaded from
ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/ the file p95v2411.zip contains Prime95.exe version 24.11 it may give a few percent increase in speed. For the exponent posted above with an iteration time of 0.144 it will take 44.18 days, if run 24/7. For every 0.001 reduction in iteration time it saves about 3/10 of a day. |

It is very easy to use 24.11 without losing any work; only an updated .exe file is required, not a new install.
1. Stop and exit Prime95 from the File menu. 2. Locate your Prime95 directory (usually ../Program Files/Prime95/)and rename Prime95.exe to Prime95.old 3. Download p95v2411.zip from the above link. 4. Extract Prime95.exe from the .zip to the Prime95 directory you found in step 2 5. Double click on Prime95.exe and it will pick up where version 23.8 left off, using all of the 23.8 settings. |

I'd also backup the cache file of the test - just in case a serious bug is detected in 24.11. Unlikely, but it only takes 2 seconds to be on the sure side...

seems too slow for a computer marked by 3000+. Can a combination of good cpu and very poor motherboard/mem slow down a machine so much? My p4 1.5G is 0.124s per 10k when working on ~27M exponents, even with SDram 133.
I heard that using shared video memory could slow down prime95. Another thing worth to check is that there might be some unexpected (might malicious) programs hidding in memory and eating up your cycles. Turn off the prime95 (and all other app), and Ctrl+Alt+Del to see the cpu usage which should be under 1%. If not, then it's a sign of cycle stealing. I use Zonelab Zonealarm as my firewall on windows machines, which generally take up only 1-2% of total cpu power (P4 1.5G) Last fiddled with by nngs on 2005-05-09 at 16:38 |

Prime95 is heavily SSE2-optimized, and at least the socket A Semprons don't have SSE2:

On 32 bit AMD processors, updating from version 23.x to 24.6 decreases iteration times by 15% to 33%, depending on FFT size.
24.11 was oriented towards 64 bit AMD processors; sorry if we misled you earlier. My Athlon MP 1900+ (1600 MHz) running 24.6 has about the same iteration time as your 2000 MHz Sempron running 23.8. 24.6 installs the same way as I outlined for 24.11. Substitute p95v246.zip for p95v2411.zip. |
