Grrr.. what the hack?! This is typical "cultural misunderstanding". I knew about the movie (did not see it), but when I posted I didn't think at all to it! In my culture, the words are synonym for a drunk (i.e. alcoholic) which is somehow suitable for the thread...

Any attempts to drag such a fine upstanding thread into the gutter will be resisted most strenuously.

Read her book. She passed a polygraph about it. Or watch the movie based upon the book.

This now makes me think of "Silent All These Years".

Default A watched pot never boils...

...if you are so busy watching it that you forget to turn on the stove burner beneath it.

[In my defense, I spent at most 5 minutes watching and stirring before realizing my omission.]

The picture is apt for the expression.

The first known instance is in John Frith's A Mirror to Know Thyself of 1532: This Text holdeth their noses so hard to the grindstone, that it clean disfigureth their faces.

Frith, however, wound up being more than disfigured for his writings, as described here.

Commenting on the recent anti-police-violence protests, a Twitterer makes a similar nomenclatural clarification as is needed for the potent potable commonly referred to as "champagne":
