I know somebody (quite well) that was in on the first round that screened the candidates. They said that some were excellent and some were just rando (like names of famous people that had no relation to astronomy, space, or science history).

Reminds me of a long-ago space mission -- either Gemini or Apollo -- in which there was a minor electrical problem -- static on the radio or something. The astronaut using the thing gave it a solid whap. The problem immediately cleared up.
