If the card and/or AMD drivers turns out to be problematic under Windows 10 (highly likely), I will switch back to my old NVidia 3GB 1060 card, then definitely move the Radeon VII to a Linux box. EDIT: Well, lol, less than 10 minutes after posting this my Windows 10 rebooted. I can already tell this experience parallels what I have experienced for decades now: AMD hardware is fine, but their drivers suck! I am now re-scheming my installation to fit the Radeon VII into a Linux environment. I don't even know what ROCm is yet. Time to research... Your timing was great, lol! :) Last fiddled with by PhilF on 2019-12-29 at 21:42 Reason: LoL |

![]() ROCm was in my Debian repository. I can't get any video output for some reason. I just ssh into it. Last fiddled with by paulunderwood on 2019-12-29 at 23:07 |

I'm not sure if I'm the only one that is experiencing this but my Radeon VII is going crazy after installing the adrenaline 2019.12.2 (2020 edition) driver update. Lots of screen tearing / spots.
I thought it was my GPU dying but an uninstall reverted all the problems. Last fiddled with by dcheuk on 2020-01-07 at 06:00 |

revisiting running two instances:
I have been running 1 instance at sclk 4 mem 1200. Iteration times are 692us on a 5M FFT. If I run 2 instances, combined throughput is 635us vs 692us, but 85 temp 196 watts vs. 82 temp 182 watts (9.0% faster, 7.7% more power) If I run one instance at a faster clock (sclk 5): 655us 88 temp 219 watts (5.6% faster, 20.3% more power) If I run one instance at a slower clock (sclk 3): 751us 70 temp 150 watts (7.9% slower, 17.6% less power) So my previous advice of running one instance is no longer true. It once again seems beneficial to run 2 instances. |

Apparently a Radeon Pro VII is coming out at some point, largely the same as Radeon VII but with double the FP64 performance per clock and slightly lower clocks to target a lower TDP. It'll be at least twice as expensive as a Radeon VII as it's a pro card, probably more than that as it'll be around the top end of the pro line. The Infinity Fabric Link to link cards with 168GB/s bandwidth is interesting technically but not practically for our use case.

Actually not bad when considering brand new, but the pro cards can't be overclocked so it will for sure be memory bound. However, RVII looks to be a much better deal when buying used. |
