David wasn't politically active at all.

Charles may have been the more outspoken of the pair, but the Fox news obit describes David as a "prolific GOP donor". Follow the money, not the speeches, or relative lack thereof.

Unfortunately, running as a Libertarian often produces results similar to not participating at all. We need at least two more major parties (or none at all). Note that that candidacy was nearly 40 years ago, half a lifetime in his case.
