GIMPS & BOINC

Why is GIMPS not compatible with BOINC? If BOINC runs, GIMPS does not work.

It's all about priorities.
When BOINC has a higher priority than GIMPS, it will get (almost) all available CPU cycles. Try upping the priority of GIMPS under "Options --> Priority..."

No. Priority = 10. But BOINC is still working.

No, so does it not function, unfortunately. BOINC demand always hundred percent of the CPU. Prime95 works only if I finish BOINC completely. Besides, the priority of BOINC is stopped on "low".

After changing the priority, you need to exit and restart Prime95. But don't set the priority to 10. It will make the computer unusable. Change it to 4.

That's right, however. The computer is usable no more with priority 10. I even wanted to say with the fact that it also does not function with this high priority. With priority 4 BOINC works to 100 percent. No chance for Prime95. I have carried out a new start of the computer naturally.

You should also try the BOINC control manager where you can control how much CPU the BOINC tasks take. That is likely the most elegant solution.

technically speaking..

Why run both?

Even if you did manage to get them sharing 50/50, you would be running the test at half your computer's speed, on both programs..

So, instead of taking, say, a week, it would take two weeks for one number.

Thus, your options are you could have done two tests in two weeks, one at a time.. or both at the same time, finding the results of them after the course of two weeks.

Now here's the clencher..

If you only run one test at a time, one test will be done in one week, and then the other one will go the second week.. but if the first one won... you got it a week earlier than you would have if you ran both programs over the course of two weeks!
