On the note of non-x86 alternatives, I've wondered if RISC V would be any use for our interests. Assuming we got code to run on it of course.

The union of these two post is what's required for a credible alternative IMO.

The ISA being open does not mean the rest will be open. And even if it was open, you'd have to implement your changes. And then you will have to validate these changes. And then pay tools to make the implementation (these cost a lot). And then you will have to pay people to do the implementation. And then you will have to pay for masks. And then you will have to pay for masks. And then you will have to pay for wafers. And if you find an issue, you'll get back to your design hoping the fix can be done without having to redo everything.

This is vastly different from open source software.

That being said, it doesn't mean this won't upset the ecosystem (in fact it already is making inroads in parts of the market), but that won't enable individuals to do funny things easily.

And I don't say that because I work at ARM
