The following article claims to prove the abc conjecture:
http://arxiv.org/abs/0901.3042v1 While the proof may be in error, it is not a crank effort. The author (Zha) has his doctorate in Arithmetic Algebraic Geometry and Algebraic Number Theory from U. of Chicago. I am not an expert, but the approach seems plausible. This may be a silly question, but, why is this only showing up here now?
I mean, the original arXiv submission is over 10 years old, and the most recent revision there is over 3 & 1/2 years old. Have there been recent developments? |

The newest possible proof from Shinichi Mochizuki in 2012 for which he invented Inter-universal Teichmüller theory.
From what I read the proof is barely understood by any other mathematicians but a few claim to have found a big hole in the proof while others claim it is good. |
