Default My computer turned off completely during the test. Is this a problem ?

Hi,

I'm new here. I`m testing my first number (double check). My computer turned off completely a few times during the test, I suppose because the CPU got too hot. But after I started up the computer again, prime95 continued to run normally.

So everything is fine, right?

Incidentally, I have cooled down the CPU and the computer is now running without problems.

The Prime95 application will cause your CPU to generate significantly more heat that most other applications due to the extreme coding optimizations made to get the most work done. Other hardware components can be stressed too, but heat can definitely be a factor to shut down your machine. If you have taken steps to cool the CPU and your machine stays on, then you're probably good to go. Good luck!

Thanks for the answer. But what I wanted to know was, if the computer turns off completely, so shuts down while running the application Prime95, then this is probably not a problem for the test because Prime95 generally caches the data. That's right, isn“t?

Because my computer had turned off completely while Prime95 was running and after booting up my computer, Prime95 continued to run normally.

So I assume that Prime95 saves or caches the data at regular intervals, right?

The test resumes where it left off and is probably fine, but if it isn't the end residues won't match so we'll know. In either case only that test will be affected as long as there aren't still cooling issues.

OK, thanks for the answer. Then I want to hope that in this case the test at the end is not faulty.

If you're running Windows you can likely view some kind of event that was logged in Event Viewer, additionally some BIOS's store shutdown events or at the next boot will hold on POST to display the error, this may be user configurable and may not be setup on your system.

Also you may wish to use the 'torture test' feature of Prime95 to check that you have sufficient cooling and system stability prior to starting unattended work. Typically about 20 minutes is long enough to heat saturate a system to the point of getting an idea of whether or not it's going to be able to cool itself well enough or not. System stability can often be ascertained in about 24hrs, but not always.

I too had a similar issue when undervolting a processor, I'd come back after a day and everything seemed normal except the system up time didn't match with expectations. Eventually I caught it and figured it out, oddly though the system was stable for 24hrs in a P95 torture test.
