anandtech has chased this up a bit; the 28-cores-at-5GHz was an aggressive-cooling (2.5hp water chiller) demonstration on a custom motherboard with crazy voltage regulator cooling, where the presenter 'accidentally' failed to say "overclocked".

I remember the P4 days when people complained that Intel was soldering the headspreader in some attempt to stop overclocking. And then people were complaining that Intel was using PTIM again. Truly can't please everyone. Maybe there really is a market there. PTIM skus for people who want to de-lid and STIM for people who have better things to do with their time.

How does soldering stop overclocking? Am I not extreme enough, is it a LN2 thing...
Right now I'd love it if I didn't have to delid + LM CPUs I buy. |
