With a big thanks to Xyzzy, I now have my Mythic Grid scoring page available at:

It can score grids in any base from base-2 to base-10. It should be able to work on any size grid, but I haven't tested it larger than 30x30 base-10.

I'm not sure you're working on the same problem we are. It isn't possible to get a score of 3e13 on a base-2 10x10 grid. The maximum "digit" length of a number in a 10x10 grid is 10. For base-2, the largest 10-digit number is 2^10-1 = 1023. So you can't get a score greater than 1023.

Also, your base-10 10x10 grid has at least one fatal flaw, it does not contain the number 100. I don't think your scoring algorithm is working quite right. The problem we are working on is find how many consecutive integers are contained in the given mxn grid, and the last consecutive number is the score of the grid. The integers can be vertical (read top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top), horizontal (read from left-to-right, or right-to-left), or either diagonal (read from corner-to-corner). So, in the case of your 10x10 grid above, it gets a score of 99, since it has all integers from 1 to 99, but doesn't have 100 in it.

Also, I was able to manually improve Till's base-10 20x20 grid from 1020 up to 1040. Here is the improved grid:

Yes, misunderstood your puzzle, I've already used broken lines in the "word search", so you could find 100 close to the upper right corner in 10x10 grid. Now modifying my code.

ps. but this still means that where score<100 those grids are valid here also.

  • m\y *n\y, y by y boxes before overflow (\ is floor of division)
  • ((n mod y)+1) times ((m mod y)+1) places to start boxes.

probably a few things missing.

The first 6x6 square with score 42 turned up after testing 300k squares, nothing new within 10 mio square tests. So I am quite confident that it has the maximum score.

The first 7x7 square with score 64 turned up after testing 15mio squares, nothing new within 63.7 mio square tests. Less confidence here, but still some (75% maybe).

So the central term sequence might be 1, 3, 7, 15, 26, 42, 64, ...
The only possible match in OEIS is A131076 then.

Surprisingly there is an easy computer proof that we can't do better for m=n=6: so there is no grid for score=45: we can't even place the numbers from [32,45] on the long full lines (row,column,diagonal), note that these has got 6 bits in base two, so we have to place these on the full lines.

For m=n=7 I've a longer optimized search proof, first placing the numbers from [64,70] in the full long lines in all possible ways, using square symmetry resulted that we have to check "only" ~4 billion grids. And that is easy, much easier than a lazy approach of 2^(m*n)=2^49 grids checking. With a similar short search I was able to rediscover the m=n=6, score=44 solution.

So I've been a bit too quick on my predictions for 6x6 and 7x7 in base 2. Then there seem to be no OEIS matches for any of the sequences in the base 2 table.


Your fixed code results really look very good. I improved my own code but it's still no match at all; my topscore for a 20x20 in base 10 is just 1098 now...
