Cauchar was at Nottingham the year after I started my PhD - the staff at the university, particularly Ivan Fesenko who gets mentioned in some of the write-ups and John Cremona who was head of department, went above and beyond to convince the Home Office that he was a really good mathematician worthy of being granted asylum, and clearly they were correct.
