France vs Argentina - that was some scoring binge by Les Bleu Cheeses.
So both team Ronaldo and team Messi go home, and the defending champs didn't even make it out of the group stage ... good on the Koreans for shocking the world with their upset of a lackluster Germany - so the last-minute free-kick 'whew!' win by Germany over Sweden in round 2 was the fluke, and the loses to Mexico and S. Korea were the real indicators. And since the US didn't qualify, I'm left rooting for our neighbors down south, Mexico. Been fun gabbing with the guys on the groundskeeping crew in my apt. complex, most of whom are of Mexican extraction, about the games. Where I live we have a choice of watching the games on either Fox or Telemundo, it's the latter for me since listening to the spanish-language announcers is way more fun, and it's not hard to learn enough of the fรบtbol lingo to follow the action, except for some more-arcane colloquialisms (about which I ask the aforementioned guys) and when the lead announcer gets really into it and goes into rapid-fire-spanish mode, which is fun to listen to even if it gets too fast to follow. |

Croatia - Danmark 1-1 (3-2)
That was a really really hard blow that Denmark is out after that game ![]() I really feel like Denmark was the better team through all 120 min, while Croatia was better in the first 45 min. Maybe some neutral party can say if they agree or not. It is even harder to accept, since there have probably never been an "easier" road ahead towards the final (even though no World Cup match is really easy), this was Denmark's big chance to go far ![]() I still have Sweden to root for since I'm half Swedish as well. I really really hope they at least go to the quarter finals (we really need a "hope" or "cross fingers and hope for the best" smiley).

2 matches today, 2 PK shootouts.
Watched the replay (Telemundo always shows the early match live then replays it 2 hrs after evening-in-Russia-match completes) of the Russia-Spain octalfinal match this afternoon (US west coast time) - what an upset! So (at least) 4 of the traditional powerhouses are gone: Germany, Argentina, Portugal, Spain. Last fiddled with by ewmayer on 2018-07-02 at 03:22 |

Portugal was never a World Cup candidate, they were lucky on Euro 2016.
Anyway, although having half of my family in Brazil I hope Belgium wins the match. Go go Belgium!!! |
