Nvidia announcement today: hohum ( yawn )

The much anticipated announcement by Nvidia at GTC 2018 was somewhat of a dissapointment. In a nutshell, they have slightly revamped the Tesla V100 to have twice the memory and have a Quadro board with similar specs ( the same chip as the V100 & also with 32G HBM2 memory ). The price is a whopping 9000 US dollars. Oh yes, they also announced another super computer in a box, the DGX-2. Its specs are as mind boggling as its price: 16 V100 Tesla boards connected with a new NVlink switch that allows all the boards to sync together & act as one giant GPU. So you have a machine that has a GPU with 512GB of memory and 81,920 Cuda cores and 10,240 TensorFlow cores. The specs are equally impressive:120 Tflops of FP64 and 1.92 Tensor Pflops !!!!! It has a price to match, only about 400,000 US dollars.

However, all that is real cool if you're Google are somebody else with similar deep pockets, the rest of us mere mortals were hoping for something a bit more mundane ( and affordable ) like the next gen upgrade for their consumer cards. We were Also looking for some relief for the GPU shortage, which now looks like it's far on the horizon, at best. This is interesting since it has been reported that TMSC stopped producing the chip for the 1080Ti around the 1st of the year, which has worsened the GPU shortage.

So... that thing is faster than AMD's Project 47 then, which I couldn't find a price for.

On GPU shortage... Have you looked recently? I've noticed in UK in recent days at least that 1050 to 1080 are more generally in stock at a not insane price. Only 1080Ti is lacking.

Yes, I check at least once a week. The availability is somewhat better, but the prices have only come down a bit; they're still ridiculous.
