That sounds quite nasty - I hope you are soon fully recovered!

An "ex family member" twice had nearly fatal run ins with diabetes. Once got their morning insulin shot and went back to sleep before eating. A young child (about 5) in the household saw them unresponsive and called EMS. The other time drove off the side of the road, rolled the car over, broke the C2 vertebrae, like Christopher Reeves (but with no displacement). Someone had noticed the erratic driving, followed them, and was about to call the police on this "drunk". They called for help and prevented the injured driver from moving their neck until EMS arrived.

Don't mess around. Health first.

Not entirely sure whether this belongs in this thread but I haven't yet found anywhere more appropriate. Mods are welcome to move it elsewhere as long as it's justified.

Anyway, I have a pudgy-cat. He's a Subsidiarye Coon (mother is a pure-bred Maine Coon, father is a Heinz) who currently weighs 6.6kg or thereabouts. When we took him to the vet a couple of months ago for treatment for an infected wound (i.e., he was a pussy-cat) he weighed 6.24kg and we were advised to put him on a diet. At his follow-up appointment, following two weeks of reduced feeding, he weighed 6.44kg.

My guess is that he needs more exercise. He won't fit into a hamster wheel, so does anyone know where I can buy a capybara wheel? The local Petsessories and PetsΠ―Us don't stock them.

Been there, done that. He's too much of an old slob to chase the spot of light.

If he has free access to food at any time of day, you need to eliminate that and feed him on a schedule. This is is hard to do, especially if you have multiple cats. Is he getting food from other sources (birds, etc.)? Does he get a lot of treats?

I did look for the large wheels (our cat weighs 10+ kilos, too). They exist but they are somewhat expensive and sell not so well so these are not at the physical stores. but by mail order only - so I gave up.

Yeah. I hear you. I currently have a similar problem. Six cats, two of which are overweight.

Crix (AKA "Lump"; an older kitten) barely moves. Riley has been putting on a few grams lately, even though he is young and chases rats and crickets.

We're trying to manage this by refusing to allow the cats to order KFC or Pizza Hut while we're away.

I think that's the problem with our cat --- take-away food. Specifically him taking away neighbours' cats' food. Not sure how to stop it.
