One of the brightest and gentlest mathematicians I've ever met has severe Asperger's. No names but several other forum members have met him and should be able to guess immediately to whom I'm referring.
It had not occurred to me that ASD would be taken as a pejorative. Between my own experiences, plus working in a place which can be drenched in psycho-babble, I suppose that I am pretty matter-of-fact about such conditions. I don't suppose that I am that surprised that some might take it so, now that you mention it.

Angry I think it's time we forgive RDS and unban him immediately! He's been banned for far too long...

I've been thinking about this for the past 7 months, and I'm sorry for bumping an old thread, but PLEASE unban RDS! I want that to happen by the time we discover another Mersenne prime, and that could happen at any time, depending on the exponents checked. Don't you understand Forgive and Forget? Obviously not. You should have forgiven him by now. Seriously, I think 19 months is MORE than enough time to be banned for an insult! It's not like he hacked the forums, joined ISIS, nukes the U.S., or flooded FactorDB to the point that it crashes unrecoverably. In my opinion, those are MUCH worse offenses than what he did, and he didn't do any of those 4. So PLEASE UNBAN HIM! And please tell me how to gain access to the Hasselhoff forum without having to donate RS36 dollars. If you don't, I'm seriously considering reserving every unreserved sequence <140 digits, and running them until they hit 140 digits (or terminate/merge), so that Yafu@Home doesn't have any more sequences to run after they finish their current queue. You don't want that, do you? I'm really upset at the moment because of this (IMHO) unexpected ban!

Bob should a lack of tolerance for newbies that may not have stated things using the right words, those that appeared to be ill informed, and those stretching to areas where they had limited knowledge. He drove newbies away. Those here on this forum have worked to foster an environment of helpfulness and education, while also rightly marking cranks and idiots for what they are. He could be helpful, but often was not counter productive. His attitude was very quick out the gate. He also could get quite rude. This was in part because he failed to understand that this forum has a spectrum of users, from the energetic but naive middle schooler, to the hardened academics and IT pros.

He was repeatedly counseled and repeatedly given bans before (some weeks to a month long), but failed to reform. His presence became disruptive.

Despite all of this I still hope that he is healthy and has a fulfilling life.

My strictly personal opinion: I've never saw him done anything I had a problem with.

I did not post anything from the Soapbox, as that is an area of more loose language.

Sampled only the first one, not enough time for more. Yes, I have no problem with that post. That says nothing objective above that I have no problem with that post. It says nothing about the post, about RDS, etc.

TBH: I was disappointed he never commented on any of my posts. I could have surely learned something.

TBH I have learned far more from helpful commenters who write something like "Oops, you meant 'N-1' rather than N, and could mention hybrid methods" instead of "STFU you idiot who knows nothing about the topic." How is the latter helpful in any way? It didn't even mention what part of the statement caused the issue, so not helpful for any further readers as well.

I understand some of the frustration, and this forum holds a higher standard than many others. Not all his posts were like this. But too many were punishing people who wanted to write something helpful, and he'd ad hominem attack because he didn't like the wording of something in paragraph 3.

This is not by any means a new quandry. See, for instance, the 2009 slide set https://www.slideshare.net/dberkholz...g-your-project. I don't want to apply that word, but see the definition on slide 6 and see if it applies.

To whom? ;-)

But seriously, that's all fine. That I have no problem with RDS's posts does not imply anything to anyone else. I do not use his approach, so no one needs to care about me not caring about how and what RDS writes. When he writes about math, I'm interested. When he does not, I ignore it. Please let's not pretend none of his posts were about math, can we?

I just thought that it might be possibly useful to show that not universally everyone has a problem with RDS, because I can imagine that those who do may possibly never consider people like me actually exist.

  1. \text{ RDS being a super mod}\to \text{ he'd probably move or delete half the forum}
  2. \text{ RDS being a mod}\to\text{ he'd probably move or delete half the subforum}
  3. \text{ RDS being a normal user}\to\text{ he'd yell and scream at half the posters (not necessarily all new)}
  4. \text{ RDS being a banned user}\to\text{He is unable to do any of that, unless he finds a hole in the forum software or code to circumvent}

No, I'm just showing the possibilities of possible outcomes given what I understand of the forum.
