Most of the high end cards used for mining will draw 75 watts through the PCIe slot. Many power supply cables may not be able to handle that if you connect more than one of those boards to the same chain of connectors.

It looks like it is just a sata converter to molex 4-pin. Given that the molex connector supports 5v and 12v but not 3.3v I would imagine that the 3.3v power is not used. Based upon http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/...ower-connector I estimate 76.5watts max power draw assuming the draw is correctly balanced between 5v and 12v(which it is unlikely to be I think).
I would suggest directly using the molex connector which would allow 55w from the 5v pin and 132w from the 12w pin according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molex_connector.
It may be safe to use two off molex connectors on one cable but I would not suggest considering more.

It is perfectly OK to have few of those adapters, and few GPU-s inside, only you need is more PS units. My friend mining Primecoin, on the Radeon 290X cards. Has 6 cards on same MB with six like this adapters and three PS with total of 2.1kW ( he calculated to load be no more then 50 % ) of power of each PS.
His "machine" consumes about 1.1 kW and working 24/7 several months without any problem. So if he can mine Primecoin, I think you can do LL or factoring with GPU.

Is there an easy way of starting all the PSs at once? Theoretically this should be fairly easy with a special dividing cable from the motherboard's 20+4 pin socket I think. Are there any available solutions such as this?

I was advised by a vendor of similar hardware on eBay that the max draw was 60W. A Quadro 2000 is feasible on that, and being a Quadro is professional quality. They're very economical to buy used now. They're not the best throughput per watt though. I have one running atop a minitower with such a rig. See the mersenne.ca benchmark pages re throughput per watt-day versus gpu.
