What is the structure on top of the jet in the first 2 pictures?

The plane is a EMB-145. It's an Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft.

The structure is an Ericsson Erye radar.

I thought it must be an AWAC type plane. But, since it looked like it had openings in the device, I thought that it might be a research type.
